Random Events
There are a few events that can randomly occur while you're trapsing about Peoria St. Some are just mild inconveniences, but others can turn deadly.
Large Mugger
The tall, muscular brute will randomly appear when you enter or exit the Alleyway. You can try to attack him, but he's too fast for you and will knock you out and take all of your money. Or you can just give him your $20-Bill to appease him. He seems to appear regularly if you exit the bar into the alley from the fire escape, rather than through the front door.
This was mentioned in the Casino section, but you can Examine one of the slot machines in the Casino for a Coin to rebuild your taxi fare stash if the big guy takes all your money.
Normal Mugger
This guy will appear at random as you move along the street. I believe he can appear anywhere except the Police Station and the Construction Site. If you give him a $20-Bill you'll never see him again. If you give him some Coins, he'll shoot you. You can fight him off if you wish. Just Hit him and he'll run away. But he'll be back, and sporting various levels of battle damage each time. If you try to attack him a fourth time, he'll have enough and shoot you. I've had runs where I never see him at all, and ones where I'll find him all four times in four successive Moves. So it's up to you how much you want to risk the final confrontation.
Sugar Shack
She appears in front of the Police Station. I'd played this game three or four times before I ever encountered her, so she's pretty random. She tells you that she's mad at Siegel, and bobby trapped his car. This serves as a warning that the car is rigged to blow. Which is not something I knew the first time through, so guess what my first death was? At any rate, she's also not happy with you, and if you let things go she'll shoot you. You can Hit her and knock her out, then rifle through her purse. This will give you the second $20-Bill, the Handgun, and a useless Cosmetic.
Bum
The unhoused person will randomly appear in front of the Gun Shop. He says he has some sweet tips to make your life easier, and for 50¢ he'll pass the information along. He doesn't tell you anything that you can't learn somewhere else, so it's up to you if you want to give him any of your Coins.
Alligator
This giant alligator appears in the sewers. The screen to the left of the Casino entrance, where the elevator lets out, is randomly his lair. Meeting him is instant death, unless you have bullets in your gun. Shooting him is the only way to survive your encounter.
Outside Bar
The late Joe Siegel has his car parked out front. Luckily you poached the key from his pocket earlier. Use the Key2 on the door and let yourself in.
Inside Car
Inside the car there are a few things you can do, but only one thing that you should do. Namely, Open up the glove compartment. There are three things in there that you need to Take and Examine. The Note2 turns out to be the vehicle registration, and reading it will give you Joe's Westend address. The Map has a note scrawled on it telling Ace to follow the marked route, and to remember that he doesn't want the cops to find Mrs. Sternwood in the trunk. Well that sounds sinister…
The Snapshot shows a plus-sized woman. You feel like you know who that is, but can't quite remember. When you're done looking at everything, Move out of the car.
Outside Bar
Move to the left.
News Stand
Nothing important to do here. The guy running the stand recognizes you, and warns you that the police are looking for you, if you Speak with him. You can drop 50 cents on a paper, but it just tells you that the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. If you need that particular piece of news in your inventory, just pay the man and Take one of the papers hanging on the stand. Move to the left again.
Gun Shop
You can go inside if you want and buy some ammo and a gun, assuming you have the funds. You don't need any of this, but you can stock up if you want to do some optional things. Move left again.
Blue Cab
There's a blue taxi cab parked here. Once you enter this screen, the Peoria address will be automatically added to your address book. You can either Move into the cab here, or you can Move left to the next screen.Yellow Cab
Here's another cab. You need to take a cab to travel around Chicago. You can take either one of these. Each ride will cost three Coins. The only difference between the two taxis is that the yellow one will give you one free ride if you run out of Coins, while the blue cabbie will have you arrested if you take a ride when you're out of cash.
Move into a whichever cab you want. Speak to the cabbie and select the Westend address.
Outside Apartment
The Westend address will bring you to an apartment building. Use your Coins on the "Pay Here" slot in the back of the taxi. Move out of the cab, then Open the door of the building and head inside.Apartment Lobby
Use the Card you found in the Wallet on the slot next to the elevator. Joe's access key summons the elevator. Move into the elevator.
Apartment Elevator
Use the Card in the slot inside and you'll be whisked away to an upper floor. Move out once the doors open.
Joe's Apartment
There's a Photo on top of the fireplace, which you need to Examine. You can Take it as well, but the main thing is to read the Kedzie St. address to get it added to your address book. There's also a Magazine you can Take from the coffee table, but you don't need this for anything. Head back to the cab.
Yellow/Blue Cab
Speak to the taxi driver, and select the Kedzie address. Upon arrival, pay the man through the usual methods and Move out of the cab.
Outside Bungalow
You get dropped off outside a small bungalow. The door is locked, and you're fresh out of new keys. But this is a quiet neighborhood…and no one seems to be around…
Use your .38 on the door to shoot it and, by extension, unlock it. Open up the door and Move inside.
Bungalow
There's a few things on the nightstand of interest. There's a Note3 and a Note4, both of which reveal combinations when Examined. Note3 is the useful one, so Take it. There's also an Earring on the desk, but you don't need to pick that up unless you really want to. Open up the desk and Take the Key5 and the Diary you find inside it. Examine the Diary to see the word "Martha" written on the cover. Open the Diary and then Take the Bookmark.
Examine the Diary to see that Martha has a thing for John Sternwood, and wants to get him to leave his wife. Joe Siegal would prefer Martha have an interest in him instead. Hmmm…so the dead man had a thing for this mysterious Martha, who in turn had a thing for a married man? And, according to the Map, that man's wife might be in the trunk of the car outside the bar.
We're done here, so head back to the cab.
Yellow/Blue Cab
Speak to the cabbie and select Sherman from the address book. Pay the man, then exit the cab.
Outside Office Building
Not much to see here. Just an office building. Open up the Door and Move inside.
Office Lobby
Move through the door on the right.
Outside Doctor's Office
Use the Key5 you grabbed from Martha's Bungalow on the door, then Open it and Move into the office.
Doctor's Office
Welp, we got a wall of drugs. But, more importantly, there's a file cabinet! Neither of the two notes with combinations on them will work, so it's time for brute force. Use the .38 on the cabinet to destroy the lock and open the top cabinet drawer.
Inside are four different files. File1 has your chart, which isn't all that interesting, but the advice that you should stop smoking is probably a sound medical diagnosis. File2 has a note that Martha Vickers, Joe Siegal's secretary, wants his order delivered to the bar. Ah, so that's who the mysterious author of the Diary is. File3 is some random medical file.
File4 is where things get extra interesting. It's a list of medications and their effects. You really want to pay attention to this, especially the Bisodiumits which is the antidote to the memory-erasing effects of the Diethanol Trimene. Just takes multiple doses to kick in. The other medication of note is the Sodium Pentothal, which causes unconscious people to tell the truth. How do you get unconscious people to talk? No time for that now, we have to remember who we are!!
Examine the bottles on the shelves until you find one labeled Bisodium. Take that, as well as the other two bottles that look just like it, to gain three Meds6 bottles in your inventory. Now Use the one of the Bisodium bottles on the Capsules to fill one up. Now Use the Capsules on Self to begin the process of regaining your memories.
Repeat this two more times to fully restore your memories. Now you remember! You're Ace Harding, former boxer turned Private Eye. The last steps now are to finish uncovering this web of death and conspiracy, and then figure out how to clear your name. Before we're done here, Take the File2 (and maybe the File4 if you want to keep those notes) if you haven't already, as well as at least one of the bottles labeled Pntothal (aka Meds1). Move back into the Office Lobby.
