Chapter 5: Rise of the Pirate God
Journey to the Crossroads
Click on the dirt twice to escape from the grave. Head all the way to the right to find the docks, complete with a boat and a ferryman. Talk to the Ferryman. Comment on the cleanliness of his boat, and then ask where he's headed. Ask if you can leave for the Crossroads now, and then ask how much the trip will cost. Exit out of the conversation and open up your inventory.
You'll find that you're carrying a Shred of Life and some Dirt. Use the Dirt on the boat, then swipe from the nearby Tip Jar while the Ferryman is distracted. Head on over to the Grog machine will your ill-gotten gains, which happens to be a lovely whole eight bill. Use the money in the Grog machine and then hit the change button to be given two pieces of eight. Hand your new coinage over to the Ferryman, and he'll take you to the Crossroads.
Escape the Crossroads
Find the Spell
Upon arriving at the Crossroads, you'll be greeted by Galeb, an odd little fellow who takes your Spirit Photograph. Nothing you can do with this right now, but remember this for later. For now, just talk to Galeb. Work your way through all of the options, but be sure to ask about how to get out of the afterlife. He'll tell you that LeChuck was able to escape using a spell. Ask him about that spell to learn that it's now buried in a chest somewhere. Time to find that spell!
Hop back into the boat and a map will appear with five possible destinations. The first thing to do is to head to the Treasure Hunting area. Once there, walk to the right to find a badly spelled sign. Click on the Skull and Crossbones on the sign, and you will collect a bone that falls off. Get back onto your boat and head to the Gateway. Walk through the turnstiles and take the path in front of the grave you woke up in. At the end of the path in front of that hill, you'll spot a dog prancing about. Give the bone you just collected to the dog to make a new friend. Pick the dog up, and Guybrush will dub him Franklin.
The next step is to use the boat to head to the Thieves' Den. Once there, walk to the right a click on the sock hanging on a stand. The resident Thief wants nothing to do with LeChuck's sock, so he lets you take it. Head back to the Treasure Hunting section. In your inventory, combine Franklin with the sock and then use the dog on the field of Xs. He'll go scampering off, so hop onto your boat and follow him to the Crossroads. Franklin is very interested in where Galeb is standing, so use the sock to drive him backwards. You'll automatically pick up the chest that Franklin unearths, but you have no way of opening it.
Make your way back to the Thieves' Den and hand the chest to the Thief. He'll unlock it, but he'll also pilfer the spell and toss it into the pile of scrolls behind him. Talk to him and use the top option to distract him. While he's looking away, use Franklin with the pile of scrolls, then steal anything you want from the den. The Thief will kick you out and steal back whatever you just stole, but Franklin will make a clean getaway. Head to the Treasure area to meet up with your faithful canine friend. He's buried the spell, but all you need to do is to use him with the field of Xs again and he'll dig it up. The spell reveals that you need four components to unlock the way back home.
Find your Guide
Finding the Guide is easy. You already own something that helps you find your way. Once you're ready, head to the Crossroads and place Franklin in the center.
Find your Anchor
Another easy one. Head to the Treasure Hunting area and have a chat with the Treasure Hunter. Ask him to demonstrate how this works, then steal the jeweled anchor while his back is turned. Head back to the Crossroads and place it in the Center.
Find your Courage
This one is a bit less literal. Sail your way to the Gateway. Now that the Ferryman is gone, you are free to take his Tip Jar. Do so, then spend some of your newly acquired loot on the nearby Grog Machine. Select some regular Grog. Booze in hand, head back to the Crossroads and place the bottle of Liquid Courage into the center.
Find your Sacrifice
A sacrifice in your name, huh? Who do we know that would do such a thing?
Sail to the Swordfighting area, and climb the mast to get into the crow's nest. Chat with Morgan to find that she is too depressed to be of much help. Take the sword from the nearby ghost head, and use the blade on Morgan. The ghost pirate wants in on this action, and you'll enter into a two-on-one insult swordfight. The calls and responses are as follows, you need three in a row to advance:
- Morgan: I'm useless. I can barely even lift my sword
- Ghost: There certainly is a foul smell coming from this fight.
- Answer: See, in some ways you are stronger than me.
- Morgan: I died a failure. I used to dream that somebody would call me the greatest Pirate Hunter in the world.
- Ghost: You make me want to puke.
- Answer: I bet people say that about you all the time.
- Ghost: I'm the most cunning pirate on the seven seas! Do you know what my IQ is, boy?
- Morgan: Seriously, on a scale of one to ten, how terrible a person am I?
- Answer: Negative one, if that.
- Ghost: I once owned a dog that was smarter than you
- Morgan: It's hopeless. I can't believe I once studied under the greatest swordsman in the Caribbean.
- Answer: He must have taught you everything you know.
- Morgan: My career as a pirate hunter was as successful as my career as a marathon runner
- Ghost: Nobody's ever drawn blood from me and nobody ever will.
- Answer: You run THAT fast?
- Ghost: Smaller men quiver at my masculine swagger
- Morgan: The way I wave this sword around... it's like I'm a little boy.
- Answer: Believe me, you're all woman.
Once you cheer Morgan up she'll take over as the guardian of that area. Talk to her and ask for some help assembling the spell. Ask about the Sacrifice, and she'll tell you to worry about the other items first. Exit the convo, then talk to her again. Ask again about the Sacrifice and she'll say she has a good idea about what it might be. Sail to the Crossroads, and Morgan will automatically sacrifice her Reputation.
Once all the spell's ingredients are in the Crossroads' center, a cutscene will trigger. Select any dialogue option you want when presented with options, and then try and grab the sword once you regain control. You'll find yourself back in the Crossroads with a new quest laid out before you.
Reclaim Your Body
Head to the Swordfighting area, and have a chat with the crab cluster. Turns out you'll need some spirit gum in order to stay in your body, and that there should be some in the Flotsam jail cell. First things first, head back to your boat and sail to the Gateway. Have a chat with Galeb if you wish, then hand him your money in order to buy the Spirit Photograph from earlier. With that in hand, head down the path to the left to encounter another Rip in reality. Head on through to find yourself on a raft above the Manatee Mating Grounds.
Chat with Winslow, and then click on the ocean to drop down to the Mating Grounds area. Walk to the right and attempt to enter the cave, and you'll be greeted by Anemone. Go through the dialogue options to discover that they won't leave the cave, and also that they has a huge crush on Winslow. Head back to the left and click on the Exit located near the ship's mast. Once back on the raft, chat with Winslow again and tell him Anemone pines for him and he'll drop a love note into the ocean.
Dive down again and go chat with Anemone. Tell them that there's a love note and they'll swim out to grab it. The swimming causes the nearby seaweed strand to begin swaying back and forth. Click on the nearby clam to make it close. When the seaweed hovers over the clam, walk away from it to make the clam open back up and release an air bubble. If you timed it right, the bubble with catch the cloth and send it to the surface. Van Winslow retrieves the package, which turns out to be the Voodoo Lady's locket.
After he sets the locket on the mast, use your Spirit Photograph on it to replace the Voodoo Lady's picture with your spirit one. Then talk to Van Winslow and ask him to press the button on the locket. This transports you into your corpse, which is now holding the dartboard in Club 41 as part of your wake. When confronted, select "I surrender!" and Grindstump will take you to jail. Exactly where we want to be!
Alas, the spirit gum is in the other cell...looks like we need an occupant for the one we're in. Click on the loose brick in the back wall, and Guybrush discovers a hidden compartment with a diary inside. Read the diary to discover how Bugeye escaped from the manatee's belly. Wait for a moment or two and Guybrush's possession will time out. We need that spirit gum to stay in your body for more than a couple minutes.
Head back through the rip, and then go to the Swordfighting area. Use the Rip there to enter Club 41 in Spirit form. Talk to Bugeye and ask him how he escaped from the Manatee. Select the choices from the diary, and Bugeye will ask if you're mocking him and pull a face. Match his fierce expression and he'll try to punch you. Since you're a ghost, his fist passes through you and he hits Grindstump instead. This sends Bugeye to jail, occupying the cell without the gum in it. Perfect!
Head back to the Gateway to get to the raft, and ask Van Winslow to press the locket's button again. Surrender once again, and now we're in the cell with the gum! Except, we have no idea which wad of gum is the one we want. Pick up the nearby mug, and then wait until you get kicked out of your body again (optionally, you can try some of the various gum chunks). Once back on the raft, head back into the bar as a ghost and you might notice that your body is now holding the mug you picked up. Talk to the bartender. Act like a scary ghost, use a pirate face, and you'll startle Grindstump. He'll wildly toss a dart which hits one of the barrels above your body, releasing a stream of root beer that fills up the mug. Now head back to the raft, have Van Winslow use the locket, and then use the root beer on the wads of gum in order to find the correct one. Guybrush automatically eats it, and you are now permanently in your body!
Click on the poster on the wall to reveal a way out of the jail cell. Click on the Escape Tunnel to proceed.
Shrinkify la Esponja Grande
We need a way to shrink the Sponge, and we need some advice for how to do it. Head to the Gateway and talk to Galeb. Ask him for advice on the spell, and he'll hand you a new recipie. Refer to this for the new list of ingredients.
First Course
The first course is Sight, or rather a lack thereof. Head to the Club 41 bar. Hanging on the wall in the back near the narwhal head is a blindfold hanging from a hook. Pick that up and you have fulfilled this requirement.
Second Course
For this course, we need a soft sound. First, use the Gateway rip to head to the raft. Dive into the ocean, and pick up the nearby Fishnet. Now swim back up and head to the Treasure Hunt area. Dig at any of the Xs and you'll find a small flock of tiny pyrite parrots. They'll fly to the right and alight upon the sign. Wander that way and use the fishnet on the parrots. Now just open your inventory and combine the parrots with the tip jar to secure them within the folds of your jacket.
Third Course
For the Touch part of the meal, head to the Treasure Hunt area and enter the Rip residing there. You'll end up in a jungle. If this is your first trip here after getting your body back, the Voodoo Lady will possess a nearby dead seagull. Talk to her and go through all the options. Once you're done chatting, simply pick up the feather laying on the ground nearby.
Fourth Course
For the secret, head to the jungle via the Rip at the Treasure Hunt area. Use your hook on the nearby treasure chest and you'll receive the belt buckle LeChuck used when he was human to gain Elaine's trust. Head to the Thieves' Den and use the belt buckle on the Thief. Now that he trusts you, click on the Secret on the table in front of him and he'll let you take it with you.
Fifth Course
For the Smell, head to the raft and pick up the deodorant that Van Winslow left behind.
Sixth Course
For the Taste portion, head to the bar and talk to Grindstump. Tell him you surrender and he'll take you to jail. Click on the Gum Stalactite to get some flavorless gum.
Defeat LeChuck
Use all the courses on La Esponja Grande and you'll end up falling onto LeChuck's ship for the final confrontation. After the scene, he'll punch you up to the crows nest. Use your hook on the mainsail to slide back down to the deck. Talk to Elaine and tell her to attack LeChuck. Wait for a moment or two and LeChuck shows up to keelhaul you. While you're being dragged under the ship, Elaine attacks which causes LeChuck to stop pulling the rope. Once you're stopped, grab the nearby keys.
Once back on deck, LeChuck throws you into the cabin, which knocks a door off its hinges and onto the deck. Let LeChuck smack you around a couple more times until you're near Elaine again. Use the keys in the locked window, which releases some barrels. Get keelhauled and tossed into the cabin again. Click on the door to lift it, then click on the barrel to set the door on top of it. Let LeChuck smack you onto the crows nest, then use the hook on the rope on the left to slide down onto an outlook over a canon. You should be able to see the Rip through a tear in the sail if you used the hook on it earlier. Let LeChuck hit you down onto the deck.
Talk to Elaine and tell her to light the cannon. Now click on the broken door and Guybrush will step onto it. LeChuck will drop down and catapult you up and into the cannon. When the cannon fires, you'll be shot into the Crossroads. When you are back in control, use your Shred of Life with the Rip.
Denouement
Watch the scene. Once you regain control, open up the inventory and use your Engagement Ring on the Center of the Crossroads. Now just watch the ending!
