Enemies
Zojoi's official YouTube channel has an incomplete Developer's Commentary playthrough series for this game. I was checking it out when trying to find stuff for the achievements (which got me nowhere), and one of the things mentioned by Dave Marsh is that there are not official names for the enemies. Given that, I'm mostly making up my own. This page largely exists to lay out the naming conventions used in the main guide.
The HP metric listed here is based on how many hits from the Wand is needed to defeat them. All HP values are based on Normal mode. For Hard/Ironman modes, at one additional hit point to all except the Big Mouth enemies.
- Description: Flying enemy with a large mouth. This is the one unofficial name that I'm keeping.
- HP: 2
- General Strategy: This enemy will shoot a green fireball at you. Either dodge the blast, or block it with your Shield. Take advantage of the mild homing properties of your Wand.
Big Mouth
- Description: Same as the standard model, just a lot bigger.
- HP: 6
- General Strategy: This enemy will shoot a green fireball at you. Either dodge the blast, or block it with your Shield. Take advantage of the mild homing properties of your Wand.
Large Big Mouth
- Description: Small little guys who will scream for reinforcements and charge at you.
- HP: 2
- General Strategy: They'll run forward and take swipes at you with their claws. Just keeping backing up and firing. The trickiest part with these little guys is that they'll swarm you in twos or threes.
Crawler
- Description: Larger and bluer than the standard version. They no longer hunt in packs when reaching this size, but they're faster and more durable. They'll attack by charging and biting you.
- HP: 5
- General Strategy: Any hiding behind a fake wall can usually be taken out quickly enough if you know they're there. Just keep blasting and your fireballs will pass through the wall while it's still dissolving and give you a couple free hits. In general, you'll need to watch their movements. When they rear up before a charge, take a couple steps to the side to avoid the rush.
Large Crawler
- Description: These share the same mouth style as the crawler family, which is why I've assigned them this name. These guys have evolved to be bipedal, and have a chameleon-like ability to camouflage themselves, rendering them invisible.
- HP: 4
- General Strategy: They'll calmly walk up to you and then chomp down with their deadly jaws. You can use Odin Vision to see through their camouflage, and their footsteps are not remotely stealthy so you'll hear them coming from a mile away. The easiest way to defeat them is to his them with an ice blast. This will not only make them visible, but also vastly slow their walking speed. This freezing method gives you ample time to blast them with fire and take them out.
As a quick little side note, the freezing method does not work in the PCVR version. In fact, ice does not seem to have any effect on them at all. To "compensate" for this, they do cast shadows now. So you can aim for the source of the shadow to try and take them out before they get to you. There is a lot more backing up and dodging that needs to happen in this version of the game.
Evolved Crawler
- Description: Floating skeleton in a cloak.
- HP: Infinite
- General Strategy: They'll float toward you and then slap you into the afterlife. You cannot kill them, but you can trap them over magic circles and temporarily freeze them with ice.
Death Wraith
- Description: Some sort of cross between a balloon, and octopus, and a spider.
- HP: 4
- General Strategy: This enemy will spit a small ball of poison gas at you. This will do damage on impact, and also continue damaging you if you stand in the cloud of gas that is formed with it bursts. You can shoot the poison ball, but if your Wand refuses to aim at it, be ready to run around a corner to avoid it. In Hard mode, these guys will sometimes float toward you to attack.
Poison Floater
- Description: Larger than the spiders that we know and love, but still one of the smaller enemies.
- HP: 1
- General Strategy: Charges at you and bites you. Just zap them with your wand before they get to you.
Spider
- Description: A bit bigger than their regular counterparts. Only appears in Hard and Ironman modes.
- HP: 3
- General Strategy: Charges at you but then stops short. It will spit a web onto you which prevents you from moving before it gets close enough to bite you. The Shield seems to block the web, but you can also strafe left and right to avoid the sticky spit. If you get ensnared, you can still fire your wand but it bites faster than you can shoot so it's best to just avoid being webbed.
Medium Spider
- Description: Big ol' boys.
- HP: 1?
- General Strategy: The ones in the Cage are taken out with one shot if using the pipes. There's one hanging out below the forge, but it seems unkillable yet is easily frightened.
Large Spider
- Description: The most largest spiders that exist.
- HP: Immeasurable
- General Strategy: These live in the mineshafts, where they have had plenty of room to grow. They'll chase after minecarts. They can be slowed down with ice, but cannot be killed.
Extra Large Spider
- Description: Looks like a big ol' troll.
- HP: 6
- General Strategy: Once freed from its cell, it'll charge at you and kill you pretty quickly if it catches you. You can do the ol' freeze method to slow it down (but not in the PCVR version) before blasting away with fire. But this is still tricky to pull off without dying. The easier method is to climb down the wall behind it on the way to a Lever and blast it from behind.
