This is technically the fourth Shadowgate 2 to release. The original Shadowgate released on the MAC, but gained more fame by getting ported to the NES, and spawned a few sequels. The original team completed a sequel for the MAC, but this was scrapped as the company decided to move their focus on to different consoles. The design documents were given to a new team to develop a second game on the TurboGrafx 16 which...certainly is a game. Those same documents were later given to another team, who made Shadowgate 64. Those documents then made the rounds again and became Beyond Shadowgate, which released on PC in 2024.
The team who made Shadowgate 64 were working on a sequel called Shadowgate Rising, but this never came to be. In 2014, there was a Shadowgate remake which got released. The team working on that were planning on giving their spin on the original Shadowgate 2 documents, but those were passed on to the Beyond Shadowgate team when the remake crew disbanded. The rights to a sequel to the remake were then sold to Forever Entertainment, who then used the concept behind the canceled Shadowgate Rising to create Shadowgate 2.
Confused yet? Don't worry about it. That's just the cost of doing business in Shadowgate tracking.
This game was originally released in an unbeatable state. While that bug has since been patched, the game is still filled with weird bugs as of the time of this writing. Most of the bugs are just cosmetic stuff, like not being able to mark off completed objectives or combat reticles staying behind after enemies have been defeated. But there are also some game breaking ones that I'm going to point out as we go to try and help you avoid them.
