Part III: Return to Monkey Island
You start by a sign that says you have a six minute walk to Monkey Island. We only have ten minutes (more or less) so we'd better get a move on and start walking to the right. Keep going until you find yourself on the beach. Head back into the jungle to reach the island overview. Check out the map in your inventory that you stole from LeChuck to get started on the directions to the Secret.
The directions tell you to begin at the red berry bush. You should be able to spot the group of red dots a bit north of the beach, but if not just hit the highlight objects button to help you out. Or check out the map. Either way, once you get there just keep following the landmarks until you reach the X. There's a convenient shovel sitting nearby. Go ahead and grab it, as it should be safe.
Huh...somehow that was actually a trap set by Captain Madison. Turns out the rival crew has the real map, but it's encrypted. Luckily, Lila can use her dark magic to hack past the firewalls, but first she needs three things tied to LeChuck. Work through the dialogue, but ultimately you need to let them know that you still have access to LeShip and that you can use that to recover what they need.
Discovering LeChuck's Secrets
Boarding LeShip
From the island overview, head to the Volcano Beach. Walk into the water on the left, then keep walking until you spot the anchor. Climb the chain to reach the familiar ledge on the hull of the ship. Climb up on deck to be stopped by Flair. Guess this won't be quite as easy as we thought. We're going to avoid some backtracking here, so head all the way to the left on the ledge and down to the rudder. Chat with Gullet, and keep pestering him about his notebook until he reveals it to be a book of poems.
Offer to help him finish them, and then pick whichever responses you think will be the silliest. Or the most normal...your choice. Once he's got the trouble stanzas satisfactorily solved, ask to see the poems. You'll be denied, but if you hand him Conrad's business card he'll change his tune. The chance at getting them published in an island newsletter is just too good to pass up!
Poem book in hand, leave the ship and head to the Giant Monkey Head. Walk up to your "partners" and alert them to the fact that you need a new disguise. Lila's magic once again comes in clutch, she just needs a secret in order to magic up a disguise. Guybrush will hand over the book of poems we just obtained, and you'll receive instructions about how to use the spell. Now that we can freely board LeShip, it's time to gather those spell ingredients.
Finding LeChuck's Favorite Food
Head to the Volcano Beach. If you've already tried boarding the ship, then there will be a dead squid washed ashore. Use the knife on it to liberate a tentacle. Now head underwater to climb the anchor chain, use the book of poems to recite the disguise spell, and make your way to the galley. Talk to Putra and ask her about LeChuck's favorite food. She's not too pleased with you since she thinks that you're Gullet, so butter her up by calling her "chef." Ask about the favorite food again, then hand over the tentacle and she'll whip up a batch of Tentacles in Daisy Sauce. Which sounds...yummy?
Finding LeChuck's Catchphrase
Once you have your disguise and have successfully boarded the ship, make your way into LeChuck's cabin. There's a diary sitting on the shelves on the right. Take that, and read through it. There will be various catchphrases mentioned throughout, and he keeps changing them up. Toward the end of the book will be a note that he hates his current one, and mention a date in the diary that he's regressing to. Flip back to that page and take note of the catchphrase mentioned there.
Finding LeChuck's Theme Song
On board the ship, head below deck and chat with Flair. She'll tell you that she's working on the theme song, but is unwilling to share just yet. Head back on deck and up by the ship's wheel, ring the bell once to call a vote. While the crew is figuring out what to vote on, sneak down to Flair's station and swipe the musical score she left on the barrel.
There's one more step to this. As you've been exploring, you may have noticed some skulls scattered about the island. We actually need to gather those. They can be found in these locations:
- Beach: where you washed ashore, all the way to the left
- Shipwreck: just inside the entrance
- The View: aka on top of the mountain in the middle of the island. On the right atop the plateau.
- Volcano Beach: sitting on the left near the water.
- Underwater: keep heading left from the anchor chair to spot this.
- Giant Monkey Head: on the path leading to the head.
Deciphering the Map
Head back to the Giant Monkey Head and let Madison know that you've got everything gathered. They start with the Theme Song and usher you over to your instrument. Place all the skulls onto the wooden stakes, then conk them all with the nearby bone. Upon being struck, they will sing out their note in solfège (do, re, mi, etc.). Once they've been conked once, their note will be displayed when hovering over them. Use this as a guide to conk them in the order shown on the musical score.
The next two steps are a bit easier. Just repeat the catchphrase you wrote down earlier, then agree to eat the Tentacles in Daisy Sauce. The map will be unlocked...but they quadruple crossed you, and Guybrush gets kicked off of a cliff.
Escape from Monkey Island
Chat with LeChuck, then commiserate with Elaine. Once you regain control pick up the ship building manual from the rock, follow Elaine and head to the Shipwreck area. Use the manual on the wreckage and the couple will rebuild the Sea Monkey and sail back to Mêlée Island.
