Part Four: Shadowgate

The Plateau

Foothills Path

Nothing to do here except to exit left.

Foothills

Climb up the stairs to reach the exit of this area.

Plateau Stairs A

Save your game. Move up to the base of the small set of steps. Move slightly left so that you have a straight shot to the next larger set of steps and quickly move up. Don't stop, don't pause, just move up. If you're too slow, you'll be squashed by a boulder. Continue up the stairs until you exit the room.

Plateau Path A

Save your game. Ascend the steps and move to the right until the Guardian of the Mountain is in range of your mighty fist. Punch away, and it will go down in 10 hits. If you strike fast enough, it won't be able to get a hit in. Once it's down, continue to the right.

Plateau Path B

Save your game. Head to the right, but keep your eyes on the sky. When you see a Undead Harpy swoop down, quickly crouch to avoid her talons. I think you can punch her as she swoops, but I don't find it worth the risk. Just keep crouching periodically as you make your way to the right and up the steps.

Plateau Steps B

Save your game. Move quickly to the right to avoid a boulder. When you get to the top of the steps, immediately move up to avoid another boulder. This is the last of the dangers here, so go a head and climb the last of the stairs.

Overlook

At last, we've made it! Move up to finally reach the living castle.

Shadowgate

Front Gate

You can have a chat with the statues if you wish. When you're ready, move up and through the door.

Statue Hall A

Move to the right past the statues to reach the next room.

Statue Hall B

Save your game. In here you'll encounter the Undead Creature. The legs and torso attack separately, but the torso cannot be defeated while the legs are still around. As the legs charge across the screen, line yourself up with them to intercept them with punches. Once they legs are defeated, the torso will pause and blink rapidly, signaling that it's now vulnerable. While it's briefly stunned, run up to it and start punching. Once it's been defeated, continue to the right down the long hallway.

Elemental Dais

We are presented with a large circle on the floor split into four quadrants, each representing a different element of nature. The goal here is to use an item of the corresponding element with each quadrant. The top-left quadrant is Earth, so use the piece of Quartz with it. The top-right is Water, use the Seashell on it. The bottom-left is Air, so use the Feather on it. And, finally, the bottom-right is fire, so toss your hunk of Coal on it. As a quick side note, the Air and Water sections can also be solved with the Canary and Piranha if you bought those from the Pet Shoppe. Once each element has been activated, step into the center to be teleported to the next room.

Organ Room

Save your game. There are some scrolls to the left that can be used with the organ for various effects, but none of those are mandatory. Instead, walk to the right until a door comes into view. Don't get too close to the door, or an Elephant Man will slam it open and crush you against the wall. To avoid this, use the Squeaky Mouse Toy on the door to frighten the beast off. Exit through the unguarded door.

Gears

Climb up the ladder.

Clock Tower

Head to the left, admiring the cute bats on your way. Be sure not to blindly jump into the open trapdoor at the far end, that way leads to doom. Instead, use the large golden chain hanging from the ceiling to have Erik lower himself safely down into the caverns beneath Shadowgate.

Shadowgate Cavern

Punch the gong to summon forth a spooky ferryman. He'll tell you to choose one item to take with you into the battle ahead. What you choose here will determine what ending you get, as well as how the Warlock Lord will meet his end. You can get the good ending by selecting the Sword, Staff of Ages, or the Paddle Ball (my personal favorite). If you choose any other item besides those three, you'll get the bad ending. Once you hand your item of choice to the ferryman, that's the last action you can take. It's recommended to Save your game here, in case you want to view all the different ending scenarios.

Pick your item, hand it to the ferryman, and enjoy the ride. You've now conquered the first second story's end!
